Raquel Welch, an actor who epitomizes the evolution of cinematic sex symbols in the 1960s, has died at the age of 82.
The actor and model, whose alluring looks became ingrained in the global zeitgeist after being propelled to superstardom from the 1966 films Fantastic Voyage and One Million Years B.C., passed away this morning after a brief illness, according to TMZ.
Welch (born Raquel Tejada) grew up in Southern California and after first planning to become a ballet dancer, she realized as she reached her teen years that her body type was not cut out for ballet. However, while dancing was out of the picture, she had just the right body for beauty pageants and soon began winning pageants throughout California, ultimately becoming Maid of California in 1958. She got married to her high school sweetheart, James Welch, and began attending San Diego State College while studying theater.
